What Should I Bring to Residential Treatment?

Following is a list of items we suggest women bring as they enter Residential Treatment at Our Hope.  Our experience suggests that the list is complete, but if you have any questions or would like to ask about items not included on the list, please call our office at 616-451-2039 or contact us on-line.

  • Comfortable clothing suitable for Michigan's climate during the length of your stay (30, 60 or 90 days), including outerwear and shoes/boots if you will be at Our Hope from October-May and a bathing suit if you will be at Our Hope during the summer. You will be sharing a bedroom and closet, so please be mindful of that when packing as drawer and hanging space is very limited and we do not have secured storage.  Coin-operated washer and dryer are available for your use.
  • Personal hygiene items and feminine hygiene products; mouthwash and oral care products containing alcohol are prohibited
  • Personal identification such as birth certificate, driver’s license (or state ID), social security card, Insurance/Medicaid/Kent Health Plan ID card
  • If available, copy of most recent physical exam and TB test result card if performed within the past year
  • Letter-writing materials including postage stamps, especially for communication during 2-week adjustment period
  • Calling card if you will need to make long distance phone calls.  A house phone is available for limited use, but no personal cell phones may be brought to Residential treatment.
  • Bedding and bath linens are provided, however if you prefer large, “soft and fluffy” bath linens, you may want to bring your own.  We have  one set of towels per client available (i.e., one washcloth, one hand towel, one bath towel).
  • Pillows are provided, but you may want to bring your own from home
  • Clothes hangers
  • Alarm clock
  • Laundry cleaning products and quarters for use in coin-operated washer and dryer at $1.00 per load
  • Caffeinated products are not allowed on the premises.  If you would like to bring candy, chips, etc., unless it is a single-serving size, you will be asked to share with the community. No soda is allowed (including caffeine-free products) unless staff provides it.
  • Your own prescription medications, including any refills on prescriptions. Please consult a staff member prior to admission as to which medications can and cannot be dispensed at Our Hope.  Any medications brought in without their original containers will not be allowed.
  • Any over-the-counter medications such as vitamins, pain relievers (i.e., Tylenol, etc.)
  • Do not bring items of value.  If necessary, Our Hope has a small lock box to hold items such as money, credit cards, and check books. We recommend not having large amounts of cash on your person.  Do not bring expensive jewelry items, etc.
  • You may bring your own CD’s, headphones, iPods, small CD players, etc.; however be aware that Our Hope is not responsible for lost or stolen items
  • We will provide you with a 3-ring Step Study Binder and ruled paper for your use.  You may want to bring a folder for holding your assignments and paperwork.  Also a calendar/planner, address book, notebook, and journal may also be useful.
  • Writing instruments (pens, pencils, etc.)
  • Cigarettes if you are a smoker; we allow smoking at certain times in a specific outside area.
  • Money for bus fare
